It is not likely that any other area in the entire world has the concentration of athletic young people as Southern California-Certainly no other section of America has so many gyms devoted to bodybuilding-And keeping close pace with the athletes are the physique photographers. In addition to the original group first spawned here, they are now migrating in droves from other sections of the country. A number of photographers with eastern addresses are actually conducting their business from the Los Angeles area. There can be no question of course, that climate is the major factor, for we have few extremes of temperature. Bodybuilders can strut about in their form-fitting T-shirts at most any time of the year and an ambitious photographer never need be too long. Some "oldtimers" have expressed concern over the vigorous new competition. However we feel the ultimate result will be to increase interest and broaden the field to an undreamed of expansion.

GRACE KELLY'S FATHER WRITES IMPORTANT TREATISE ON PHYSICAL FITNESS. In the March 57 edition of Grecian Guild Pictorial (50c PO Box 4277 University Station Tucson Arizona) John B Kelly former US Olympic athlete and former US Director of Physical Fitness, has written a splendid article stressing the need for young people to take an active interest in physical fitness. He points out that in basic strength and flexibility tests 57.9 % of American youngsters failed compared to only 8.7% of failures among European children. He exhorts us to reverse the present trend toward weakness and flabbiness in our population, that we may fully realize our great destiny.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL AMERICAN BUILD

Every now and then we have observed a heavily muscled bodybuilder perusing a book such as Physique Pictorial and expressing contempt for the fellows whose arms may only measure 13 to 15 inches instead of the extreme 17 to 18 which so many barbell enthusiasts are striving for. In their mind, these slimmer built fellows are underdeveloped and they are certain that unless a man strives for the utmost size in all his muscles, he is not worthy of photography.

However, most of our reader mail indicates that while they enjoy seeing all degrees of builds, the average fellow doesnt want monstrous size, but rather just moderate, pleasing proportions. Many a muscle boy whose contest laurels have brought him to the attention of movie producers has then been required to knock off some of his extreme size. And by contrast, a number of moderately built athletes who have never won a neighborhood contest have through their display in physique books come to the attention of the movie people and have been awarded contracts.

We feel all types of physiques which are the results of diligent training or active sports are worthy of display--if we show less of the massive types, it is because we feel they now get adequate coverage in the many fine strictly barbell books such as S&H, IronMan, Muscle Power, etc. Page 2.
